18 January 1945 - The Anamosa Eureka

Augustus McDaniel was born in New Jersey, March 27, 1854, and died January 12, 1945, at the home in Anamosa where he lived most of his life.

When 2 years of age the family moved to Jones county. On September 24, 1874, he was married to Ellen Kane. In his younger days he followed the trade of stone mason. After their marriage the young couple moved to Anamosa. There his father and older brother Richard, built the Fisher House, later known as the Gillen House, and now as the Holden Hotel.

Six years after coming to Anamosa the couple bought a home on Division street and for 64 years made their home here. In all their married life Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel have never been separated for more than three months. They observed their seventieth wedding anniversary last September.

Shortly after coming to Anamosa, Mr. McDaniel gave up the trade of stone mason and became a carpenter, following this trade until about eight years ago. He served for a time as janitor of the Anamosa school. He was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of America and a charter member of the Anamosa fire department. He was a member of the Baptist church.

Surviving are six children, Dave and Kimball of Anamosa, Clarence of Great Falls, Mont., Mrs. Blanch Houstman of Anamosa, Mrs. Alice Dosdall of Rochester, Minn., Grace Burns of New England, N.D., 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Eight of his grandsons are serving in the armed forces. His wife preceded him in death two weeks previous to the date of his death.

Services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 from the Smykil Home for Funerals with the Rev. E. A. Schlaman officiating. Miss Betty Sigworth sang, accompanied by Marjorie Peet. Members of the Anamosa fire department were pallbearers.
