7 December 1944 - The Anamosa Journal

Funeral service for Joseph A. Howe, 78, who died at Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids, last Thursday, was held Sunday afternoon at the Loder Funeral home in Anamosa. Rev. Homer E. Dalrymple officiated. Burial was in Wilcox cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Snyder, Chet Miller, Lester Richmond, Fred Powers, Christ Holmes and Ray Powers.

Joseph A. Howe was born in Canada, Oct. 4, 1866. When a boy he came with his parents to Spencer, Ia. He married Ava Aichmond, Spencer, Nov. 8, 1892. Three boys were born to the union, one of whom died in infancy.

Most of his life was spent in and about Anamosa, where he held the record of 32 years of continuous service as guard at the reformatory.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, J. P., Cedar Rapids; H. M., Marion; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Bucknum, Mrs. Caroline Lard, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. Hattie Victor, Vancouver, British Columbia; three grandchildren, Mrs. Evelyn Bleitz, and Patricia Howe, Marion, and Howard Howe, S. 1/c, R.M., now in the south Pacific.
