Arthur L. Remley, 66, died suddenly Wednesday at his home in Anamosa from a stroke. He had been in poor health for about a year, but his condition did not seem worse just prior to his death. Funeral service has been set for this Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Smykil home for funerals. Rev. E. A. Schlaman will officiate and burial will be at Riverside cemetery.

Arthur L. Remley, son of Judge and Mrs. H. M. Remley was born in Anamosa Aug. 20, 1878. He graduated from the Anamosa high school and from the State University of Iowa in 1901, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree.

He spent two years in the south, and returned to Anamosa where he has since made his home. He was married Feb. 17, 1909, to Ruth K. Kurtz, Lisbon.

Remley operated a grocery store for many years in Anamosa, and served as local postmaster for 12 years. He was food stamp administrator director in Jones county, and an employee of the O.P.A. until last March.

He was formerly a member of the Lions club here. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge and the Knights Templar. Mr. Remley was affiliated with the Baptist church.

Surviving are his wife, two children, Mrs. Eleanor E. Temple, Chicago; and Staff Sergt. Lewis K., with the U. S. Army in Italy; a granddaughter, Jane Temple, four brothers, James and Alfred, Anamosa; Robert G., Webster City; and Howard M., Mason City; and five sisters, Miss Bertha, Miss Agnes and Miss Elsie, all of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Clara Yenter, Anamosa; and Mrs. Mary Browning, Iowa City.

Funeral service for Arthur L. Remley was held last Friday afternoon at the Smykil funeral hme. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.

Arthur L. Remley was born August 20, 1878, at Anamosa, and died October 4, 1944. He was the third child of Howard M. Remley and Mary U. Remley. He graduated from the Anamosa high school in the year 1897, and attended the State University of Iowa, graduating in the class of 1901 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

After his graduation, he was employed by the American Cooperage company, Anamosa, and spent two years in their plant in Missouri. Later he purchased the grocery business of Braisted and Prentice and operated a grocery store at Anamosa for many years. In 1922, he was appointed Postmaster by President Warren G. Harding, which office he held until 1935.

Afterwards, he was appointed head of the Jones county employment office at the Courthouse in Anamosa and held this position until the office was discontinued. Later he was employed by the War Price and Rationing board of Jones county, where he was employed at the time he was taken ill. In 1938, he was appointed by Judge F. O. Ellison as one of the inheritance tax appraisers for Jones county, which office he held until his death.

He was Secretary of the Anamosa District Fair association for many years. He was a member and regular attendant of the Anamosa Baptist church and was church clerk for a period of 18 years, up to the time of his death. He was also a member of A.F. & A.M., Mount Sinai chapter and Commandery of the Masonic lodge. He was president and a member of the Anamosa school board for many years, and a charter member of the Anamosa Rotary club.

Feb. 17, 1909, he was married to Ruth K. Kurtz, Lisbon. He is survived by his widow, two children, Mrs. Eleanor Temple, Chicago, and Staff Sergeant Lewis K. Remley, now serving in the armed forces in Italy, one grandchild, Jane Ruth Temple, and the following brothers and sisters: Bertha Remley, James E. Remley, Alfred G. Remley, Agnes Remly, Robert G. Remley, Elsie J. Remley, Mrs. Mary U. Browning, Mrs. Clara L. Yenter, and Howard M. Remley.
