Joe Cook, 84, was drowned late Sunday in the Wapsipinicon river near his home at Newport.

Mr. Cook had gone after the cows about 4:30 p.m., and when he failed to return group of neighbors organized for a search. Group disbanded after midnight and resumed the search early Monday when the body was found just above the Newport bridge.

Death was termed accidental by Jones county coroner, F. L. Harrington, who said no inquest would be held. There was a large gash on the back of Mr. Cook's head.

Funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Green church with burial at Highland Grove cemetery. Loder Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and Rev. W. T. Boston of the Olin United Brethren church was in charge. Pallbearers were Hubert Shankland, Marion Grafft, Harry Jamison, John Tallman, George Shoop and Clifford Miller.

Joseph Cook, son of Joseph E.; and Elizabeth Cook, was born Jan. 11, 1862, at Highland Grove, and spent his entire life in Jones county. He was united in marriage to Nancy Emma Reed March 3, 1887, at Olin.

Seven children were born to this union, five at home, with their mother, survive.

They are: Avert, Morley; Bessie, Mrs. Jake Main, Anamosa; Jennie, Mrs. William Preston, Cedar Rapids; Hazel, Mrs. Robert Byers, Cedar Rapids, and Bud, Anamosa. Two sons, Earl and Harry, died in infancy.

Thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Joe Clay and Mrs. Alfred Pauli, accompanied by Mrs. O. N. Hollingsworth, all of Olin, sang two numbers at the service, "Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."
