4 January 1945 - The Anamosa Journal

Funeral service for Howard M. Beardsley, 50, who died early Friday morning at his home in Anamosa from an attack of heart disease, was held Sunday at the Methodist church following a brief prayer service at the home. Rev. Marion I. Sunderlin conducted the service, and the sermon was given by Rev. C. E. Burdine. Burial was in the cemetery near Martelle.

Howard Miles Beardsley, youngest son of Noah Orange and Effie Grassfield Beardsley, was born in Anamosa, Iowa, May 1, 1894, at the home where he lived at the time of his death.

He grew to manhood and was educated in the schools of Anamosa, and when a young man entered the employ of the state at the Men's Reformatory. From there he entered the service of his country in World war One on April 26, 1918. In July, 1918, he went overseas, serving eleven months with the Texas-Oklahoma division, Company B, 357th Infantry.

Upon his return home, he again took up his work at the Reformatory, where he has been steadily employed for the past 2? years. During that time he has filled many of the responsible places in the institution.

March 8, 19?? he married ?? Marie Hurt, Martelle, and six children, four sons and two daughters, were born to the union. One daughter, Edna, preceded him in death in 1940.

Surviving are his wife, four sons, Ralph, serving in the armed forces in the Pacific; and Robert, serving in the Atlantic; George and John; the daughter, Audula; two brothers, Gary and Albert, Anamosa; three sisters, Mrs. Emma House, Monticello; Mrs. ? Peet, and Mrs. Beatrice Womachka, Maquoketa.
