Gideon J. Hughes, 77, Scotch Grove, died on Christmas day at his home following a stroke and was buried Dec. 27, at the Scotch Grove cemetery, Rev F. G. Tyrrell was in charge of the service at the Presbyterian church.

Mr. Hughes was born in Jo Davies county, Ill., Sept. 4, 1863, the son of John and Selina Hughes, who settled in Scotch Grove township in 1868. He was married March 23, 1893 to Mabel J. Krause, Center Junction, who died three years later. A baby girl born of this marriage died in infancy.

He was married again Dec. 6, 1899, to Dena H. Rickels. As an active politician, Mr. Hughes was elected to the county Board of Supervisors for six terms and helped promote many activities.

He served as secretary of the Scotch Grove township school board for 40 years and formerly was a member of Burns Lodge 173 A.F. and A.M., Monticello. He was president of the Jones county Farm Bureau.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife; four children, James, Scotch Grove; Mrs. Richard Hanken, Monticello; Mrs. Robert Norris, Center Junction; and Mrs. E. J. Feddeler, Chicago, Ill/; three brothers (the rest in unreadable).
