29 June 1944 - The Anamosa Journal

Clarence Ireland, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Ireland, Anamosa, was killed late Sunday when the truck in which he and two other men were riding left highway 20 at Holgate corner, 10 miles eastof Cedar Rapids.

According to authorities, Ireland was asleep at the time of the accident. Driver of the truck, Howard Pierson, Cedar Rapids, was severely bruised and Dick Myers, relief driver, also of Cedar Rapids, was shaken but not hospitalized.

Truck was carrying empty beer cases and was headed for Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral service for Ireland was held Wednesday afternoon at the Smykil funeral home. Rev. J. K. Delahooke officiated. Interest was made in Riverside cemetery. American Legion post of Anamosa held military rites at the cemetery, where Pfc. Ernest Purcell and Sergt. Karl Smykil, home on furlough, assisted with military honors.

Pallbearers were Donald Gilmore, Howard Larson, Maynard Marek, Preston Myers, Ernest Purcell and Lyle Russell.

He was born Feb. 11, 1925 in Anamosa. He spent his entire life in the Anamosa community with the exception of the last few months. He was baptized in the Methodist church, and attended the Anamosa schools.

He entered the Army Air Corps June 22, 1943, and received a medical discharge from the service in December, 1943.

He was married April 3, 1943, to Miss Gloria Marie Mittan, Cedar Rapids. Following his discharge from service, he was employed by the Iowa State and Iron Works, Cedar Rapids, where the couple made their home.

Surviving are his wife; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Ireland, Anamosa; a twin sister, Maxine, and two other sisters, Bettie Jane and June Marie; two grandparents, Clarence Spaulding, West Branch, and Mrs. Rose Ernst, Anamosa.
