WYOMING--Funeral service for Sterling H. Brainard, 85, oldest native citizen of Wyoming who died in Mercy hospital, Anamosa, last Wednesday night was held Friday afternoon in the Harrington funeral home in Wyoming. Rev. E. G. Steinman, pastor of the Methodist church officiated.

Son of Whitney J. and Jane Cady Brainard, Wyoming pioneers, Mr. Brainard was born and lived his entire life in Jones county. He began his business career as a contractor, then served as county recorder.

In 1903 he purchased an interest in a hardware store in Wyoming. After disposing of this business he served as postmaster during the Wilson administration and later was assistant cashier of the Citizens State bank, also serving on the board of directors.

For many years he was secretary of the board of education and at the time of his death was serving as president of the Wyoming cemetery association.

As president of the Historical society he sponsored the town's Diamond Jubilee celebration in 1930. He was also a member of Keystone lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Sawyer Brainard, to whom he was married in November, 1883. One daughter, Mrs. Nona Laughlin, Waterloo; a brother, Stanley, Davenport; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Garrison of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Mae Richards, Lake Geneva, Wis., also survive.
