30 December 1943 - The Anamosa Journal

Body of Arthur B. White, 63, Anamosa, was discovered at 1:45 p.m. last Friday, in his car which was parked 30 feet from the McCann service station on highway 13 in Coggon. Linn county Coroner T. F. Hersch said he believed death was caused by an attack of heart disease a week ago Sunday. No inquest was held.

Car, facing north, had been standing in the same location since Dec. 20. Coggon residents, believing the car had been left because of motor trouble or lack of gasoline, made no investigation until Friday afternoon, when Miss Beulah McCann, daughter of George McCann, operator of the service station, looked into the car.

White's body was in a kneeling position back of the front seat with his head resting on the back cushion. Body was frozen.

Car was first noticed at 1 a.m. Sunday when Mrs. H. F. Heideman, who lives across the street from the station near which the car was parked, saw the car park and the lights go on and off several times. Mrs. Heideman told Deputy Sheriff P. J. Whittemore, Linn county, that she thought little of the occurrence because the car was still there the next morning. White's body was not visible from the street.

Mr. White left his office at the Ribstone Silo company in Anamosa about 2 o'clock on the Saturday preceding his death, and was going to Manchester on business.

Service was held from the Smykil Funeral home Sunday at 2 o'clock. Rev. Homer E. Dalrymple was the officiating minister. Leo Loyet, accompanied by pianist, Miss Florence Hale, sang two selections.

Pallbearers were Clayton Hartman, Henry Adams, Milton Chesire, Thomas Hanlon, Lem Cave and Ed Herren. Interment was in the Antioch cemetery.

He was born Sept. 19,1880 in Albany, Ill., son of John and Lizzie Adams White. He graduated from the Albany high school, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Northern Illinois college, at Fulton, Ill. He also studied law there for a year.

On Nov. 11, 1903, he married Mary Johnson of Anamosa. They moved to the farm home three miles east of Anamosa and have lived there most of the time.

Since 1925 he has held interest in the Ribstone Silo company here, first in partnership with Dave Russell, later with Clayton Hartman, and for the last two years has been sole owner. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and a past president of the organization.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Keith Richard, at home, Lowell Arthur, naval aviation mechanic, stationed overseas and one sister, Mrs. B. K. Wheeler, Washington, D.C.
