9 December 1943 - The Anamosa Journal

Body of Lon R. Watters, 72, was discovered burned almost beyond recognition in the timber on his farm west of Anamosa Saturday night.

Watters had cut wood alone Saturday, and when he failed to return at supper time his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Tom Watters, went after him. After finding the body, she called Sheriff Henry Eichhorn and Coroner F. L. Harrington, who determined death was caused by an attack of heart disease.

It is presumed that Watters started a brush fire and suffered the attack while walking toward his car. Fire raged for about five hours after Watters' body was discovered and several acres of brush and grass were burned.

Watters was born in Arizona and came to this vicinity about 50 years ago. He had been living in Anamosa recently. He is survived by his son, Tom F. Watters, who lives on the farm; five daughters, Mrs. George Northrup, Wood, Wis.; Mrs. Earl Schuchman, Jackson, Miss.; Mrs. William Shinkus, Moline, Ill.; Mrs. Andy Nielsen, Anamosa and Mrs. Marvin Coleman, Cedar Rapids.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Smykil Funeral home.
