January 20, 1944 - The Anamosa Journal

Most tragic accident in Jones county in the new year occurred Monday at 3:30 a.m. on highway 64, three miles east of Wyoming, when three persons lost their lives and four others were injured, two seriously, in an auto crash.

Mrs. Luverne Carson, 29, was killed instantly when the Chevrolet sedan in which she was riding crashed into a truck-trailer parked at side of the highway. Two others died later in Mercy hospital, Anamosa, as a result of injuries received.

The dead all of Oxford Junction: Mrs. Luverne Carson, 29, Luverne Carson, 28, Gerald Sobotka, 31.

The injured: John Buresh, driver of the car, Mrs. Lula Buresh, his wife, Delores Shedek and Arnold Sobotka, all of Oxford Junction.

All seven occupants were enroute from Monmouth, where they had been after closing the Carson cafe, to their homes in Oxford Junction in a car driven by Buresh, hardware dealer, when the crash occurred. Injured were taken to the Charles F. Saxon farmhouse nearby where they were given medical attention, and then taken by ambulance to Mercy hospital, Anamosa. Sobotka died at 4 p.m. Monday and Carson at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Trailer, minus its cab, had been parked along side the highway for two days following a break-down. Flares were set according to autoists who has passed place where accident happened. Truck belonged to Harry Stoller, Spirit Lake. Driver had taken cab to Anamosa garage to be fixed, and then proceeded to Chicago after another unit. Trailer was removed from the highway Monday, according to Jones county sheriff, Henry Eichhorn, who investigated the accident with highway patrolmen.

Oxford Junction official was called to investigate the crash as Jones County Coroner Frank L. Harrington, Wyoming, was out of the county at the time. Decision to hold no inquest was made.

The Carsons operated a cafe in Oxford Junction.

Mrs. Carson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Allen, who also operate a cafe at Oxford Junction. She was born July 15, 1915 at Scranton, Iowa. She graduated from the Oxford Junction high school in 1933. Mrs. Carson was a member of the English Lutheran church there. Surviving are her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Helen Ales, Lost Nation, and Mrs. Lawrence Conmey, Anamosa.

Carson was born Jan. 22, 1916. He was a graduate of the Wyoming high school. He was married April 14, 1939. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Verne Carson, Oxford Junction, and two sisters, Mrs. Lewis Hayden, Oxford Junction and Miss Jean Carson, Chicago.

Funeral service for Mrs. Carson was held this Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in Oxford Junction.

OXFORD JUNCTION--Funeral service, which had been planned for Mrs. Evelyn Allen Carson, first victim of an automobile accident, for Thursday afternoon in the Methodist church were postponed when her husband, Luverne Carson, third victim died in the Mercy hospital, Anamosa, Wednesday morning, and double funeral services were held for Mr. and Mrs. Carson, Friday afternoon.

Short service in charge of Rev. Robert Allen, pastor of the Presbyterian church, Wyoming, was held at Hayden Funeral home, followed by service in the school auditorium, with Rev. Herbert Graening, pastor of the Lutheran church of Wyoming in charge. Lyle Tompkins, Wyoming, accompanied by Mrs. Tompkins, was soloist. He sang "When You Come to the End of a Perfect Day" and"Sweet Hour of Prayer."

Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Harry Berner, Mrs. Edward Nowachek, and Mrs. Louis Ledvina, Oxford Junction; Mrs. Mildred Mowrey, Lowden; Miss Helen Shedek, Anamosa, and Miss Ann Hansen, East Moline, Ill.

Pallbearers for Mrs. Carson were Palmer Vaughn, Emil Hunwardsen, Robert Barth, Edward Nowachek, Louis Ledvina and Fred Lasack. Pallbearers for Mr. Carson were C. W. Paulsen, Lowden, Ray Nowachek, Monmouth, Ray C. Mowry, Raymond Mizaur, Robert Benhart an Fred Buresh.

Committment service for Mr. Carson was held at the grave by members of the Zealous lodge A.F. & A. M., of which he was a member. Interment was in the Mayflower cemetery. Many relatives and friends from surrounding towns and also from a distance, were present at the service.
