17 December 1942 - The Anamosa Journal

MONTICELLO--Henry George, 86, prominent retired farmer and stockman of Lovell township, died at his home near Monticello last Thursday afternoon following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were conducted in the Goettsch funeral home, Monticello, at 2 p.m. Saturday by Rev. Homer Dalrymple, Congregational minister, Anamosa. Burial was in Oakland cemetery.

Mr. George was born on the farm which was his home during his lifetime on April 6, 1856, the son of George and Anna Faraher George. The elder Mr. George was a native of England and his wife was born on the Isle of Man. He came to the United States in 1842, locating in Illinois, but rumors of gold in California inspired him to seek his fortune in the West.

In 1850 Mrs. George sold the Illinois farm and with a brother came to Iowa, settling in Jones county, where she purchased a part of the land now known as the George farm. At that time there were only two log cabins in the village of Monticello. In 1853 the elder Mr. George returned from the west and later added to the original tract of land, so that in 1883 the farm consisted of 700 acres.

Henry George received his education in the schools of Lovell township and as a young man assumed the management of the parental farm. For many years he engaged in the stock business, making a specialty of breeding Shorthorn cattle and horses. On Christmas day, 1877, he was married to Annabel Wilson, who died in October, 1922.

Mr. and Mrs. George were the parents of six children, two of whom, George and Thomas, preceded their father in death. Surviving are Raymond Henry George who operates the home farm; Robert George, Louiston, Ill.; Mrs. John Fraser, Monticello, and Miss Iola George, Milwaukee, Wis.
