OLIN--Funeral service of Mrs. Charles Gardner was held at the United Brethren church Thursday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Lloyd Dutro officiating. Mrs. Leon Stivers, accompanied by Mrs. H. E. Stuart, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Home."

Phoebe Ballou, youngest daughter of Andrew Ballou and Philissa Cole Ballou, was born in Hale township, Sept. 7, 1860, and died at her home in Cedar Rapids, July 28, 1942, at the age of 81.

On Dec. 25, 1881, she was married to Charles Gardner. To this marriage were born eight children, two daughters and six sons.

Couple started farming near Olin, where they lived for about 13 years. After living in Kansas six years they moved to a farm near Olin, where they lived until 1912 when they moved to Olin.

Mr. Gardner died at his home in Olin in 1926. Mrs. Gardner disposed of her home and lived with her children. She made her home in Cedar Rapids for the last 12 years. One daughter, Mrs. Mabel Remaley, also preceded her in death in 1910.

Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Will Crawford, Delmar; six sons--Henry and Hubert, Center Point; Lester, Buchanan; and Ray, Earl and Frank, Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Sarah J. Duntz, Beatrice, Nebr.; four brothers--Jessie, Clarence; Simeon, Olin; Andrew, Chicago; and Charles, Olin; 14 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gardner transferred her membership to the United Brethren church in Olin in 1910 and has held her membership in this church since that time.

Burial was in the Olin cemetery. H. E. Carter, Guy Macomber, F. E. Truax, Roy Moreland, H. W. Taylor, and L. J. Rohwedder were the casket bearers.
