Simon Thomas McLaughlin, 79, life-time resident of Anamosa, died Monday evening. Funeral service was held Wednesday at St. Patrick's church with a requiem high mass conducted by Rev. P. J. Behan.
Mr. McLaughlin was born in Anamosa Nov. 18, 1863, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard McLaughlin. He spent his boyhood on a farm nine miles north of Anamosa and later was married to Grace Dougherty, Anamosa, on June 18, 1895. Four children were born to them: Earl, Chicago; Maldean and Rita, Anamosa; and one daughter, Mary Eileen, who died in infancy.
For many years Mr. McLaughlin ran an implement and harness business in Anamosa. Even though he was employed at the Men's Reformatory for 20 years, he always kept a shop.
Mr. McLaughlin was a lover of horses and was active in the Fair association. He was a charter member of the fire department, life-long member of the Catholic church, charter member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Woodmen of America.
Besides his three children, Mr. McLaughlin is survived by one brother, B. I. McLaughlin, Anamosa, and four grandchildren, Earl James, jr., Mary Joan, Robert and Ruth McLaughlin. His wife died 10 years ago.
Casket bearers were J. E. Remley, Lou Freeman, John Hanlon, John Fogarty, Tom McGreevy and Phil Daly. Choir was directed by Albert Ament.
Burial was in Holy Cross cemetery with the McNamara Funeral home in charge.
