The Anamosa Eureka, Anamosa, Iowa, Friday, January 28th, 1862

S. H. SMITH-The news that this estimable young man was killed at the attack of Fort Donelson, threw a shadow of gloom over the whole town of Anamosa for about two years past, first acting as clerk for Hersy, Staples & Co., and afterwards as a partner of G. D. Hilton in the grain and lumber business. A few months ago he received the appointment of Sergeant Major of the 14th regiment, and he left here to occupy that position.

He was highly esteemed and admired buy all who knew him for his honesty and amiability, and his friends all feel as if they had lost a brother.
