13 August 1942 - The Anamosa Journal

Orva Calkins, 39, hired man on the Al Mayfield farm four miles north of Olin on the blacktop road was killed late Sunday by a bull that gored him and pushed his body into a six-foot ditch.

Calkins was alone on the farm at the time and it was believed that he went out to round up the cattle. He was found about 8:30 p.m. face down in the ditch and his body badly mangled. His watch was stopped at 6:30 p.m.

When the Mayfield family returned home one of the sons went on horseback to get the cows and saw blood on the bull's head and legs. Searching he discovered the body in five inches of water. Calkins was unmarried.

Funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Calkins, who live two miles west of Olin, and three brothers and four sisters, Miss Jessie Calkins, Olin; Ray Calkins, Fort Des Moines; Mrs. Harry Lauberback, in Nebraska; Mrs. Olga Gallagher, Council Bluffs; Mrs. Mary Lansing, Perry; F. J. Calkins, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Verne C. Calkins, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
