6 August 1942 - The Anamosa Journal

Tragic deaths took a toll at opposite ends of Jones county of lives of a 19-year-old farm youth and a 2-year-old farm girl last week end.

Harlan Rodman, Martelle, was killed Saturday about 3:30 a.m. a short distance from his farm home when his car struck a concrete abutment. ...

Harlan was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rodman... .

Rodman's accident occurred about four and one half miles southeast of Martelle, and only one mile from the Rodman home. Accident was discovered shortly afterwards by La Verne Pieper, cream route operator, who was making his rounds.

Body was found in the driver's seat of the car which was demolished. Youth had gone to Anamosa to the carnival for the evening according to his parents and was returning home when the accident occurred.

Car was later towed to a Mount Vernon garage.

Coroner F. L. Harrington, Wyoming, and Sheriff Henry Eichhorn, Anamosa, concluded that the youth must have died instantly. Authorities thought it possible that the accident might have occurred during the rainstorm which struck the vicinity about that time.

Funeral service was conducted at the Federated church in Lisbon Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Gaylord Hamilton read the service. Burial was in the Lisbon cemetery with Cliff Johnson in charge.

Casketbearers were Wencil Popek, Lawrence Kohl, Alvin Harmen, Charles Smith, Francis Fridel and Bernard Fridel.

Surviving besides his parents are his five brothers, Raymond, Roy, Lawrence, Charles and Burton.
