15 August 1918 - The Anamosa Eureka

Center Junction, August 6. Jacob H. Courtney died at 9 o'clock, Tuesday evening, and the funeral will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church, Friday, at 1 o'clock p.m., with burial in the North Madison cemetery. Mr. Courtney had a long illness covering an entire year, with the exception of four weeks when he was able to be up. During all of that time he was affectionately cared for by his good wife. He was born at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, June 10, 1837. He came to Iowa at the age of 18 years and settled at Bellevue, in Jackson county. He was married in August 1862, to Mary Elizabeth Gardner of Bellevue. He enlisted in and became a member of Co. K, of the 31st Iowa Volunteers, and served during the war of the rebellion. At the close of the war and about the year 1867, he came to Jones county and settled on a farm near Center Junction. After the loss of his first wife, who died in 1881, Mr. Courtney was married to Mrs. Alice Riley (nee Hoffman), in September, 1891, at Martinsberg, West Virginia, who survives. Since 1896, Mr. Courtney had been a resident of Center Junction. His surviving children, who are by his first wife, are Mrs. Robert Moncrief, of Center Junction; James and Albert Courtney of Steamboat Spring, Colorado and Mrs. Mert. Millner, of Wyoming. They are all here for the funeral of their father.
