January 20, 1916 - The Cascade Pioneer

Monticello Express: Matt Noyes, for a half century a resident of Monticello, died Tuesday afternoon, January 11 at 1:30, after an acute illness of ten days duration. It had been known for a week before his death that his condition was critical, and therefore there were many inquiries from friends as to his condition. Mr. Noyes had not been feeling well during the winter, and the last time we saw him walking from his residence to the business part of town, possibly two weeks before his death, he complained that he could not keep up the old pace.

Mr. Noyes, always a hale fellow, will be missed in Monticello for a long time to come. He had a wide acquaintanceship, and he never lacked for a welcome from some source at all times. His was a sociable nature, and his visits were always sought because he was a man of wide information.

Mr. Noyes was a loyal citizen who never flinched when drafted into service for the advancement of the community's material interests. As a public officer he served not his party, but the people, who were entitled to his services.

Mr. Noyes was born at Lynne, Connecticut, June 11, 1844, and was therefore nearly 72 years old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa in 1863, and lived for a time with his relative George Noyes in Cass township. He went back to the east but the call of the west was strong, and he returned in 1865. For many years he engaged in stockbuying with C. E. Wales. During several years he was in the agricultural implement business and later engaged in the dry goods business with the firm of Wales, Noyes & Co. That business was traded for a tract of land in Palo Alto county, the farming of which Mr. Noyes superintended for a number of years. He owned at one time the Lew Lawrence farm near Sand Spring, and for several years previous to his death owned a farm in Clay township. He served as a member of the board of supervisors of Jones county for more than a decade.

Mr. Noyes was married to Evelyn Griffin, a native of Connecticut, March 7, 1871. They were the parents of four children, Grace and Alice, who died when small, and Anna and John who survive their father. Mrs. Noyes died July 2, 1883. Mr. Noyes was married April 26, 188? to Miss Aggie Matthews, who died June 27, 1894, leaving one child, Clara, who survives. She is a teacher in the schools at Mishawaka, Indiana. She reached home a few hours before the death of her father.

Mr. Noyes had for many years been a member of Burns Lodge, No. 183 A.F. & A.M., and his funeral is today being conducted by Rev. John W. Innes under the auspices of that order.
