5 June 1941 - The Anamosa Journal

Final rites for John W. Stickel, 58, Central City, who died Tuesday morning after a long illness at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Smykil funeral home.

Rev. Homer E. Dalrymple, pastor of the First Congregational church, will officiate, and burial will be in the family lot in Riverside cemetery.

Son of James and Grace Strickel, Mr. Strickel was born Sept. 26, 1862, in Jones county and lived in the vicinity of Anamosa and Waubeek all his life with the exception of three years which he spent in Montana.

He was engaged in railroading for many years and then moved to a farm. Because of ill health he sold his farm March 1, 1941, and moved to Central City where he made his home with his sister, Miss Mary Strickel. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

Mr. Strickel is survived by his sister, Mary G., another sister, Mrs. Martha A. Schroeder, Marion, and two brothers, Robert W., Independence, and Amos A., Cedar Rapids. A brother, James H. Strickel, Olin, preceded him in death only last week, and another brother, Charles E. Strickel, guard at the Men's State reformatory, was killed three years ago when a crazed convict threw him from a balcony in a cell house. A sister, Frances, also preceded Mr. Stickel in death.
