MONTIELLO- John Henry Perrine, 88, Monticello, died on Monday, Feb. 27, at Mercy hospital, Anamosa, following a four months illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m., at the Goettsch Funeral home, Monticello. Rev. James R. Gundrum, St. Michel's Episcopal Church, Cedar Rapids, officiated at the service.

He was born April 23, 1872, son of Henry Walker Perrine and Mary Baker Perrine, Langworthy. He attended grade schools in Langworthy, Anamosa, Wells, Minn., and Indianola, and finished high school in Monticello in 1891.

He worked in the restaurant, now the Monti café, with Joe Petcina and later with B. B. Ryan. In 1899 he bought the building and the restaurant. He retired from the business after about 50 years.

On Oct. 24, 1894, he was married to Minnie Mae Ryan, daughter of Bealah and Samaria Bickford Ryan.

He was a member of the First Congregational church, Monticello, and a member of Burns lodge No., 173, A.F. and A.M. He served as worshipful master in 1917 and 1918.

For a number of years he played with the Monticello Municipal band and was active in civic affairs and acted as director of the Jones County Fair board. He served for 30 years on the Monticello fire department from which he retired April 20, 1928.

For two years he farmed with his son on Oak Lawn farm near Anamosa. He later worked with his son-in-law, Paul N. Smith, in growing hybrid seed corn.

Survivors include four children, LaVetta Perrine and Samaria, Mrs. Paul Smith, Anamosa; Beahl T. Perrine, Cedar Rapids; and George G. Waite, Anamosa. Others include five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife.
