23 February 1961 - The Anamosa Eureka

L. A. "Bud" Downing, 59, a resident of Anamosa for 57 years and a grocer here since 1925, died at his home at 206 North Davis street Wednesday, Feb. 22, following an eight-month illness.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the Congregational church, Anamosa. Rev. Robert Cleveland and Rev. Lee Hobel will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Anamosa.

Pallbearers will be Bernard Bunce, James W. Peet, Marion Platner, Verne Purcell, Cletus McNamara and Lawrence LaBarge.

Friends may call at the Goettsch Funeral home until noon Friday. Casket will not be opened at the church.

He was born April 5, 1901, son of Don A. Downing and Jane Leech Downing, Galesburg, Ill. He came to Anamosa in 1903. He was married to Margret McDonald, Center Junction, July 10, 1924, at Davenport. Mr. and Mrs. Downing lived their married life in Anamosa.

He graduated from the Anamosa high school and Cedar Rapids Business school. He operated a grocery store, Tyler and Downing, for 36 years.

Most Anamosa retail stores will be closed Friday, Feb. 24, from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. in observance of funeral services being held for L. A. "Bud" Downing.

Tyler and Downing grocery store will close at noon and will be closed the remainder of the day Friday.

He was a member of Anamosa lodge No. 46 A.F. & A.M., Mt. Siani chapter, Mt. Olivet commandry, El Kahir Shrine, Knights of Pythias lodge, and was active in the Congregational church.

He was a director of Citizen's Savings bank, past president of the Anamosa school board and had served 14 years on the school board, chairman of United fund, member of the Riverside cemetery board, board of assessment and review, and Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret E.; one daughter, Margret Ann, Mrs. L. H. Ketelsen; and one son, D. A. Downing, all of Anamosa.

Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. D. A. Downing, Anamosa; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Yount, Anamosa; and Mrs. Marvin Westphal, Maquoketa.

He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters.
