February 2, 1961 - The Anamosa Eureka

Mary Elvira Cherry, 98, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids, as the result of a broken hip received at the home of her son and wife, Anamosa, with whom she had made her home for many years.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m., at the Slade Funeral home, Leon. Burial was in the Leon cemetery.

She was born June 29, 1862, daughter of Brazil B. and Niagra H. Adkins, near Carlisle, Warren county. She was married to Arthur Martin Cherry Oct. 27, 1885, at Des Moines. Three sons were born to this union.

Her father, Brazil B. Adkins, left to serve in the Union army in the Civil war when she was an infant and did not return until the end of hostilities in 1865. She was a member of the Methodist church. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Survivors include three sons: William A. Cherry, Chehalis, Wash.; Albert I. Cherry, Corydon; and Clifford L. Cherry, Anamosa; and one step-son, Edward P. Cherry, Des Moines.

Other survivors include numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oct. 13, 1929.
