5 January 1961 - The Anamosa Eurkea

Jones county recorded its first traffic fatality in 1961 early Tuesday, Jan. 3, when Larry Lee Mizaur, 21, Oxford Junction, was killed instantly after his automobile struck a bridge abutment on highway 136 about 1.2 miles east of Oxford Junction.

Lester Shedek, 20, who was riding with Mizaur, was injured in the accident. He received a fractured collarbone and chest injuries. Emergency treatment was administered by Dr. Lee L. Homan, Oxford Junction, and Shedek was taken to Jackson county hospital in Maquoketa.

Shedek had arrived home on leave on Monday, Jan. 2, from San Francisco. He was enroute to Chicago where he was to have begun training in electronics school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Shedek of Oxford Junction.

Mizaur was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mizaur, also of Oxford Junction.

Lewis Hayden, Oxford Junction mortician, summoned the sheriff's office following the accident.

According to Jones county Sheriff Lews Dreibelbis, the accident occurred about 12:45 a.m., when the car went out of control on a curve with an icy approach to the bridge and struck the right-hand bridge abutment. Rear of the car spun completely about, throwing Mizaur from the auto, and smashed against the concrete railing. Mizaur's head struck the concrete railing and he was killed instantly.

Car then rebounded from the impacdt and continued to travel nearly the full length of the bridge, coming to rest on the opposite side of the highway at the far end of the bridge.

Mizaur was a graduate of Oxford Junction high school and had worked for one year for the Milwaukee railroad. He then joined with his father in the hardware business in Oxford Junction where he had been since.

Services for Mizaur will be held Friday, Jan. 6, at 1:30 p.m. from the Methodist church in Oxford Junction. Rev. G. M. Field will officiate. Burial will be in Mayflower cemetery in Oxford Junction.

Mizaur is survived by his parents, a brother, Kenneth, and a sister, Patti. Kenneth and Patti are both in high school. He is also survived by a grandmother, Mrs. Hazel Hale.
