15 December 1977 - Midland Times

Two Olin men died early Tuesday morning of injuries suffered in a murder-suicide following a domestic disturbance in an Olin apartment house.

Dr. John L. Bailey, Jones County medical examiner, said Marion K. Sweet, 41, and his son-in-law, Steven L. Haas, 23, died of internal bleeding from gunshot wounds in their chests.

Jones County Sheriff John Cook said Haas shot his father-in-law abut 1:45 a.m. Tuesday in an apartment rented by his estranged wife, Cheryl, before turning the gun on himself. Sweet was pronounced dead at the scene and Haas was dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Cook said the Haas vehicle was found in a ditch on Highway 64 west of Olin corners, but it was not known how Haas got to his wife's apartment.

Mrs. Haas reportedly called her parents, who live a half a block away, for help after her husband came to the apartment.

Marion K. Sweet was born April 12, 1936, in Iowa City, the son of Kenneth Sweet and Geraldine Thumma Boots. He attended Olin Schools and married Geraldine Capron at the Anamosa Methodist Church on September 1, 1955.

The couple lived a few years at Anamosa, and lived the rest of their lives at Olin. Since February, 1955, Sweet had been an electrician trouble shooter for overseas equipment for Iowa Manufacturing Company, Cedar Rapids. He was a member of the Olin Volunteer Fire Department.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Olin Methodist Church, with burial in Olin Cemetery. Hayden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Ralph Grote will officiate, with Mrs. Gregg Von Behren at the organ and Loren Hartwig as soloist. Pallbearers are Walter Emmert, Wrenden Fall, Sam Capron, David Capron, Mike Sweet and Donald Paulsen.

Marion Sweet is survived by his wife, Geraldine; five children, Mrs. Steven (Cheryl) Haas, Olin and Robert, Susan, Sondra and Jane at home; a grandson, Brent Haas, and his parents, Kenneth Sweet and Mrs. Geraldine Boots.
