Death of Old Resident

George McQuillen Succumbs to Heart Trouble at Home in Cascade Friday

Death from heart trouble claimed one of the old and most respected citizens of this community last Friday evening at 8 o’clock when George McQuillen, Sr. passed away at his place of residence on O’Connell Avenue. While Mr. McQuillen had been in poor health and had suffered several severe spells during the past year, his death was a surprise when it came so suddenly. He had been upon the streets during the early part of the week and was feeling fairly good, but among those better informed as to his actual condition his state of health was precarious and his sudden end was not an unlooked for event.

Mr. McQuillen was born in Albany, N.Y. in 1837, and came west to Richland township, Jones county, Iowa, with his parents in 1846. The McQuillen family for years was one of the most prominent in that section, and later as one of the McQuillen brothers, was known far and wide as among the leading farmers of eastern Iowa.

Mr. McQuillen was married in 1866 to Katherine Flanigan, of Washington township. In 1870, Mr. McQuillen removed to his present homestead in Washington township where he continued to reside until 1905 when he relinquished the management of the farm to his son, George, and with his wife and family came to Cascade, and where his life’s career was closed after a residence in this vicinity of sixty-two years. Mr. McQuillen was a generous hearted man, a firm Christian, and a most companionable associate. He kept well informed of all of the events of the times and was a most desirable citizen.

His death is a great loss to his family and among those who enjoyed the pleasure of his acquaintance.

Mr. McQuillen is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. John Orr, of Cascade, Mrs. Ed Supple of Washington township; Maggie and Florence, at home, and sons, M.B. and George of Washington township. Also survived by brothers, R. H. and John McQuillen, of Richland township, and Supervisor, T. H. McQuillen of Cascade.

The funeral took place at 10:30 o’clock Mass Sunday morning, Rev. L. Roche officiating. The remains were taken to the cemetery in Temple Hill for burial. The pall bearers were Robert McNally, Jas. F. Fagan, Jas. B. Skahill, S. T. Kean, John Dolan and John C. Devlin.
