Clifford K. First, 84, of Monticello, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Memorial services: 1 p.m. Saturday, St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at a later date. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Monticello.

Clifford was born Oct. 3, 1919, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Walter and Margaret (Reuter) First. He married Helen Vesey on Jan. 5, 1945, in St. Matthew's Church in Monticello. Clifford graduated from Lenox College in Hopkinton. He became a bookkeeper for several years and then became a bricklayer, primarily for Seedorf Masonry of Strawberry Point and for Paulson Construction in Cedar Rapids. Clifford and Helen owned and operated the Rocky Nook Resort in Delhi for many years, where he loved to fish and do woodworking. They wintered in Florida for 21 years after retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; three sons, Steven First of Milwaukee, Wis., Dr. Philip (Christine) First of Monticello and Timothy (Sherry) First of Largo, Fla.; a daughter, Debra (Dave) Joosten of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Scott (Kelly) First, Christine First (Ken Schemph), Kiley (Dana) Eisenman, Brian First, Heather Joosten, Carson and Logan First; a great-grandson, Conner Eisenman; and two brothers, Robert First of Monticello and Eugene (Laverne) First of Cedar Rapids. Memorials are preferred and will go to the Alzheimer's Association.
