Old Soldier Answers Last Roll Call

Ezra Densmore Morton was born in Sullivan, New Hampshire, July 18, 1834 and came with his parents to Massillon, Cedar county, Iowa, in 1841 where he continued to reside until the years of manhood.

On June 10, 1856, he was married to Miss Harriet Cave and moved to a farm southwest of Oxford Junction until the call was made for men to enlist in defense of their country in the great civil war. He went to the front in 1862 leaving his wife and two children in the care of Levi Van Sickle, with whose family she resided for a time, later going to house keeping nearby until the return of Mr. Morton, Oct. 5, 1864, when he was honorably discharged at Davenport because of disability due to a disease contracted in the south from which he never full recovered.

He later moved to Oxford Junction where he was known as a good citizen, quiet and assuming, local to his country and home.

He passed away at his home on April 12, 1911, age 76 years, 9 months and 24 days. He leaves a wife and 3 daughters, Mrs. Ella Minor, of Haper, Kans., Mrs. Anna McClure and Mrs. Eliza Eggert, of Oxford Jct., who attended at his bedside to the last. He also leaves one full brother, D. F. Morton, of this city, two half sisters, Mrs. Emma Van Sickle, of Massillon and Mrs. Nancy McClure, of Nebraska, and a half brother, Joseph Morton, of Nebr.; eight grand children and six great grand children, a sadly diminishing number of old comrades and a host of friends.

The funeral services were held in the Lutheran church Friday morning, the entire main body of the church being occupied by those directly related to the deceased or his family. The service was under the direction of Rev. F. Bollmann who spoke from the sacred word "It is finished." The interment took place in the Massillon cemetery.
