Michael Rae, one of the early settlers of Dubuque county, died at the residence of T. F. Kennedy on Thursday, August 21st, 1890. The deceased was born in county Down, Ireland, in 1809, and therefore was 81 years old at the time of his death. He emigrated to the United States in 1817, locating temporarily at Pittsburg, and from thence to St. Louis, and in 1849 came to Dubuque, where he was employed as a smelter with George Wild. He also mined for sometime. For a time he engaged in the dairy business in West Dubuque. He later purchased land in Julien township aud accumulated a handsome competence. Later he purchased a farm in Prairie Creek on which he resided up to February, 1890, since which he resided with his son-in-law, Tobias F. Kennedy in Whitewater township His wife died three years ago. Of his children there survive him Michael and James of Pender, Neb., Mrs. George McLean of Dubuque township, Mrs. Tobias F. Kennedy and Miss Katie Rae of Whitewater. The deceased was an honest man and a good neighbor and believed in the practice of the golden rule. The funeral took place at Pleasant Grove and was largely attended. The Rev. J. Comerford, Rev. F. X. Feuerstein, of Cascade, and Rev J. Kelly of Garry Owen officiating.
