Cascade Pioneer, Aug. 9, 1889

Michael Loes, an old settler and citizen of Jones county, died at the family residence in Washington township on Sunday evening, Aug. 4th, 1889. He was born Merlingen. Luxemburg, in 1807, therefore had reached the ripe age 82 years. He emigrated to the United States in 1857, locating in Richland township, Jones county, Iowa. Subsequently he moved to Washington township, where he resided up to the time of his death. He was a man of strong but kindly impulses, and was respected highly by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. There survive him his wife, and the following children: Mrs. N. Greene, of Washington township. Mrs. Meunster, Mrs. Jno. Niers, Jr., and John M. Loes. of Cascade, Peter M. Loes, of Manning, Anna, Margaret, Peter, Michael, Nicholas. Frank, and Fred, who reside at the homestead. The funeral took place on Tuesday at St. Mary's church, Cascade, and was very largely attended, Rev. F. X. Feuerstein officiating. The following members of the Loes family were in attendance at the obsequies of their relative: Mathias and N. J. Loes, of Dubuque; Nicholas Loes,Jr., of Key West, Michael and Peter Loes, of Worthington, and John, Jacob, and J . P . Loes of Cascade, Mesdames Peter Loes aud Henry Loes of Key West, and Michael Loes and family of Jackson county.
