History of Johnson Co.Iowa pg.309 Matthew Ten Eyck
seems to have been the first white man who permanently settled and made a home on land now included within the bounds of Iowa City....The
first white child born in Iowa City was Hannah Ten Eyck, who was born 1-8-1840. PG.937 Mathew Ten
Eick was born 8-12-1805 in Monmouth Co.NJ. He married Salmone Cole, daughter of John and Hannah Cole 6-19-1832. They had ten children.
I believe Matthew Ten Eyck or Mathew Ten Eick was
brother of John Ten Eick born in NJ July,1799(my Gggrandfather). Also, these two were brothers of Henry Ten Eick b.1802 NJ who settled in MI. His wife was Eleanor Barkalow of KY. There's another brother and sister of theirs, children of Mathew and Cornelia Post Ten Eyck of NJ I'm searching for. For genealogical purposes, not for profit,
I'd like to find families of M.+S.Cole Ten Eick--
William P. b.5-26-1833 who married 10-20-1858 Margaret Hunter whose children were Charlotte, Frank, Eddie, Matthew and Joseph.(Rubin,Mary,Maggie and Josie didn't survive);
William P.'s siblings:Tunis C.,Mary H.,Auslom
(probably Civil War Vet),John F.,Cornelia.
(siblings Mathew,Tilly S and Salmone didn't survive). What's confusing is from a Newspaper
dated 1927,"First white Born in Johnson Co.Dies
12-19-1927." Mary Ten Eyck 67 years old, believed
to be the first white person born in Johnson Co. was buried yesterday with services conducted at the Brick Chapel here. Rev.Mille of Mt.Vernon officiating. A sister Mrs.Cornelia Cowgill of West Branch survived her. What happened to Hannah?
