Cause of death for Warren Phinney

I am looking for cause of death for my great grandparents. Warren Phinney was born about 1827 in Delaware County, Ohio and moved to Johnson County, Iowa. He was in the 1860 census there with his wife
Frances and children William and Henrietta.
He joined the 4th Iowa in the Civil War, but I can't find a record of what happened to him. I do know that he died shortly after signing up. his wife also died shortly after 1861 and the children were sent to live with relatives. Was there a disease that was rampant in that area at that time. I assume that he may have been killed in the war but cannot find a record. Are there any records that may help me find anything.
