Victor Index- Victor, Iowa; December 1915SAMUEL FARRELL SUDDENLY DIES - HIS SICKNESS WAS SHORT AND SEVERE, BUT NO COMPLAINT WAS HEARD
Samuel Farrell was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, March 14, 1850. In 1857 he came with his parents to Iowa, residing in Iowa City. February 8, '73, he was married to Isabelle Lindamood of Iowa City. Two years later they moved to Iowa County. Three childen were given them: a son, William Rex, who died in infancy when but four months old, and two daughters, Mrs. Hilda Watkinson, of Eddyville, Nebraska, and Mrs. Willard Coates of Victor. Mr. Farrell was a life-long farmer, following that occupation until four years ago when he retired in Victor. He was a splendid neighbor, and being such, he won many people to a close friendship. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. He is the first of a family of six children to pass away. Thus, he leaves to miss him, two brothers: William Farrell of South Dakota and John Farrell of Della, Kansas; three sisters: Mrs. Mary Brown of Norway, Mrs. Johanna Brown of Ocheyedan, Iowa, Mrs. Emma Wilhite of Rockwell, Iowa, his wife and two daughters and a host of friends, His sickness was short and severe but not a murmur of complaint was heard. Tuesday night, December 14, at the age of 65 years and 9 months, he passed away, peacefully and calmly and with folded hands. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. J. F. Rex.

Samuel Farrell March 14, 1850 – December 14, 1915************
Charles Hur Watkinson was born January 31, 1868 at Waynesville Ohio, the son of William and Maria Southern Watkinson. When he was a boy of seven, he moved with his parents to Victor Iowa, when he attended grade school. Here he met the little girl, who was later to become his wife. In 1884, when he was sixteen, the family came west and settled in the Plum Creek Region. As a young man in a pioneer community, it was his duty to herd cattle for the family and the neighbors in the hill pasture land north of the Platte River Valley. During his spare time, he read avidly the books which were loaned to him by school-teachers, in this manner he became a well read individual. On Christmas Eve, 1900 at Victor Iowa, he was united in marriage to Hilda Farrell. Hilda was born on December 21, 1874 in Johnson County Iowa. The daughter of Samuel and Isabel Farrell. The family moved to Victor Iowa, when she was a little girl and there she grew to womanhood. For several years she taught school. After their marriage they came immediately to the home he had established near Eddyville. For a few months after their marriage they lived in a soddy. Later a house was built from lumber which had been shipped to Plum Creek from the Chicago Exposition of the 1890's. Though they lived in three houses during their marriage, all were on the same two sections of land and in the same school district. Their home was located on the Dry Fork Road was a stopping place during the 1900's for traffic between Plum Creek and the Wood River valley. Their door was always open to friend or stranger, and at their table there was always room for another chair. Their hospitality made their home, "Truely the House on the side of the road."In the early spring of 1946, the day of Anna Watkinson Lockard's funeral in Sumner, the house caught fire from overheated wiring. Some of those in Sumner for the services drove back to the farm and removed as much of the treasured furniture from the house before it burned completely to the ground, managing to save some of their belongings. A one story house was moved to the same location, later and Charles and Hilda again took residence by the side of the road. Hilda and Charles became members of the Eddyville Christian Church during a schoolhouse meeting conducted my it's minister. Hilda and Charles were known and loved as Aunt Hilda and Uncle Charley to a wide circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances throughout the area.
Three children were born to Charles and Hilda Watkinson, twin sons Warren and Wendell and one daughter Alta Isabel. Hilda Farrel Watkinson died November 27, 1959 and Charles Hur died a short time later on January 4, 1960. Services were held at the Christian Church in Lexington with the Reverend Dwayne Dunning officiating. Both Hilda and Charles are buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery northwest of Lexington.
Uncle Charley and Aunt Hilda will long be remembered by their family. While Uncle Charley was very hard of hearing, he was always jolly, while it seemed everybody talked very loudly, he always understood and he enjoyed the family gatherings despite his handicap. Aunt Hilda always had a smile she was very short or seemed short to many of us at the time, but she had a quality of happiness around her that bubbled over and produced an atmosphere of home folks to all who knew and loved them.
