I am looking for information about the Simbersky family from Bohemia who settled in Jefferson township near Shueyville about 1855. I believe that this family may be related to my great grandfather, Joseph Slanina, from Pecin, Bohemia, who came to Jefferson township in 1854.

I have found several records for this surname in Johnson county. However, I don't know if these are all from the same family. Here's the information about them that I've identified:

Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Leo Baca, Vol. IV, New York 1847 - 1869; SCHIMBERSKY, Barbara 20, Joseph 45, Anna 35, Franziska 13, Maria 8, ? 6, Anna 5, Josefa 3, Antonia 1/3, Bohemia; aboard the Elida, 7, Sept. 1855; Iowa.

Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Leo Baca, Vol. VIII, Baltimore 1834-1879; SIMPERSKY (?), Johann 29, Bohemia; Ohio, 28 September 1877; Iowa.

1859 Landowners Map, Johnson county; J. Simbersky in Sec. 1, Jefferson township, about 80 acres.

Naturalizations-First Papers (Dist ct) 1855-1872, Johnson county; Page 101 Joseph SIMPERSKY, Born Bohemia 1816, Emigrated apx. Sept 1855 into port of New York. Signed 29 Sep 1860

WPA Cemetery Records, Johnson county, 1939, and Johnson county genealogical society cemetery records.
St. Joseph's cemetery, Iowa City, Iowa Joseph (Josef) SIMBERSKY, Age 75y 6m 3das, b. 19 Brezna [March] 1817, d. 22 Zaril [September] 1892, Section 1, Lot 61, Block 1. FH (Family Headstone).

According to my counts from the 1856 Iowa state census, there were approximately 149 Bohemians living in Jefferson township at that time, out of a total population of 583. A note on the census indicates that they all arrived in the township within the previous 3 years.

If anyone recognizes any of these individuals or this family, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,
Mary Boyd
