Liselotte Blasingame “Lottie” was born on February 17, 1926 in Mannheim, Germany to Robert and Helene Agnes (Kinscher) Lauinger. She passed peacefully in her sleep on October 1, 2024 in Iowa City, Iowa. Lottie loved her city of Mannheim, Germany. Her grandfather owned property in the city and was a pastry chef. She liked to talk about visiting him and she was proud of the large house he owned.
Lottie grew up during the period when Hitler was in power and she was a teenager during World War II. Her brother was enlisted into the Nazi Army and he died in combat on the Russian front. Eighty five percent of her beloved city, Mannheim was destroyed by allied bombing. Sergeant Amos Blasingame was part of the occupation force to assist the Germans in rebuilding after the war. That is when he met Lottie and in 1948, they married in Mannheim.
Lottie naturalized as a US citizen in 1951 and traveled far and wide during her husband’s military career. She worked as an administrative specialist for the Department of Defense for 37 years and retired in 2011 when she was 85 years old.
Lottie was an excellent cook and cooked authentic German dishes from an old German cookbook. She loved to walk, which likely accounts for her long, healthy life.
Lottie is survived by her son, Steve and two grandchildren. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Rock Island National Cemetery.
