Kristen Kay Uhler Smith, 49, of Pleasant Shade, TN, formerly of Iowa City, died on Tuesday, September 24 at her home in Tennessee.
A committal service will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville at 2:00pm on Friday, November 1. Following the committal service friends and family are invited to celebrate Kristen at the Coralville American Legion from 3:00pm – 6:00pm.
Kristen was born on March 18, 1975 in Springfield, IL, the daughter of Robert and Janet Uhler. She graduated in 1993 from West High School in Iowa City and was a graduate of Kirkwood Community College with an associate’s degree as a veterinary technician.
Kristen relocated to Tennessee from Iowa in 2015 and soon thereafter began working at Martin’s Grocery in the Defeated Creek Community where she was a friendly face. She was respected and loved by all the customers who became acquainted with her.
Kristen had a quick wit, great sense of humor and pleasant demeanor. She was a true animal lover, enjoyed being outdoors and a devoted Hawkeye fan. She was a loyal friend and her family was always important to her.
On September 15, 2017, Kristen was united in marriage to Paul Aaron Smith Jr. Together they were avid motorcyclists and enjoyed riding and touring while riding the couple’s Harley Davidson.
Kristen is survived by her husband Paul; two stepdaughters, Felicia Kay Smith of Dewitt, Iowa and Braidin Grace Smith of Marion, Iowa; brother Michael Uhler of Iowa City, Iowa and stepfather Bruce Lanik of Coralville, Iowa. She is also survived by her niece Darian Showalter; five step-grandchildren; her close friends Rachel, Scott and Dana David and numerous extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Uhler and Janet Kay Lanik.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to organizations that were close to Kristen’s heart: the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Johnson County (NAMIJC) because Kristen believed that through organizations like NAMI, the support and public awareness of people affected by mental illness can build better lives or to the Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.
