Jane Alice Omann, 80, formerly of Coralville, died peacefully at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown on September 6.

A gathering to celebrate Jane’s life will be from 4pm-6pm on September 17 at Lensing Kirkwood Room 515 Kirkwood Ave Iowa City where light refreshments will be served. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward The Food Bank, Table to Table or the Coralville Center for Performing Arts.

Jane was born on July 3, 1944 in Des Moines, IA the daughter of Lester and Zelpha (Brown) Omann. She was a graduate of Iowa City City High School and received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Iowa, following in her mother Zelpha’s footsteps.

Jane lived in Dallas Center, Iowa where her parents ran a restaurant called The Omann Cafe, until Jane was in second grade and her family moved to Iowa City with the hope that all Jane and her siblings would attend the University of Iowa.

Jane spent her childhood and teen years helping out at her parents Iowa City restaurant The Campus Grill.

Jane worked for 47 years in the office of the Registrar at the University of Iowa, a career that started in 1966 when she was hired as a clerk and from which she retired in 2013 as Associate Registrar. Jane’s original plan was to use her Spanish degree to join the Peace Corps and travel abroad, instead she stayed and helped countless University of Iowa Students navigate their academic and graduation needs.

Jane led a rich and active life, devoting her free time to family and friends , and had a long-standing dinner commitment with her friends Phyllis Black, Carol Cain and Ruth Grimm at diverse Iowa City and surrounding eateries, with Jane always choosing the location and keeping a detailed notebook of their excursions.

Jane made it a point to regularly visit family members, accompanied by her characteristic kindness and quick wit. She made weekly visits to her brother Larry’s home by the river, where she could debate current events with her brother and enjoy a sweet treat curated by her sister-in-law Jan.

Jane visited with her mother daily until her mother’s death, sharing a meal and a quick catch up of each one’s daily events.

Jane cherished her time volunteering at the Iowa City Food Bank, The Coralville Center for Performing Arts (where she could catch a show while working) and Table to Table.

Jane was a super fan of Iowa Hawkeyes Women’s Basketball for over 30 years and she carried season tickets, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on the women at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Jane was an avid reader and loved staying up to date on current events through late night talk shows and national news sources. She was also an enthusiastic card player and was a member of a card club for many years.

Jane is survived by her nieces Julie Omann Brandt of Baxter Iowa, Michelle Gonzales of Newton Iowa, Dondi Szombatfalvy of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Catherine Stanley of San Rafael, California and Erin O’Connor of Arlington, Virginia and her nephews Chris O’Conner of Plainsboro, NJ, John O’Conner of Raleigh, North Carolina, Justin O’Conner of Long Beach, California and Hank Doster of Edina, Minnesota as well as several great nieces and nephews and Sister-in-Law Janice Omann of Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Larry Omann and Philip Doster, sister Delores O’Conner and sister-in-law Pat Doster.

Jane’s family would like to recognize the love and care that Jane received from nurses Brandice Armstrong and Tonya Naughton in Iowa City, and the tireless, caring and compassionate care given by the Nurses, Support Staff and Aides at Glenwood Place, The Willows of Marshalltown and Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Remember “It’s a good day”.
