Jo Ann was born September 19, 1932 in Collinsville, Illinois, the daughter of Alvin and Adeline (Eise) Allan. She was a graduate of Collinsville High School. On February 2,1951 Jo Ann married Carl E. Betts. Jo Ann and Carl moved to Iowa City in 1955.
Jo Ann was the patient coordinator of cleft palate research at UIHC for several years. She also tested hearing through Grant Wood AEA and volunteered at the Mercy Hospital Gift shop. Prior to that Jo Ann was a devoted wife and mother. She cherished the time spent with her husband and four sons.
Jo Ann was a lifetime member and former board member (secretary) of the Iowa City Community Theatre. She costumed many shows and acted in at least one. She contributed to almost every facet of the Community Theater on and off the stage. She was a gifted seamstress and quilter who loved traveling to many quilt shows throughout Iowa and the US with friends. Jo shared her quilting passion with others by leading workshops as well as designing a huge quilt for the show “Quilters” in 1990 at Community Theater. After organizing many women to quilt it, it hung in the theater until it was later auctioned off for the benefit of the theater. Jo Ann was also a founding member of the Old Capitol Quilt Guild and a member of the Cedar Rapids Quilt Guild.
Jo had many interests in life and made many long lasting friendships through her many endeavors. She was even able to go to lunch once a month with the “Whimsical Women of Wednesday” up until several months ago. She will be missed by family and friends.
The family extends their appreciation to the wonderful staff and caregivers at The Bird House and Iowa City Hospice.
Jo Ann is survived by three sons, Mikel (Vicki) Betts of Iowa City, Scott (Alice) Betts of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Kirk Betts of North Liberty; daughter-in-law, Pamela of Winamac, Indiana; grandchildren, Jameson, Andy (Charlene), and Joel (April); five great-grandchildren; and her brother, David (Terri) Scottsdale, Arizona.
