Thomas Kay Shires, 88, died peacefully on Saturday, January 20, 2024.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 2 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or The Nature Conservancy.

Thomas was born July 12, 1935 in Albany, New York, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Shires. He received his bachelor’s degree from Colgate University and both his Degree in Medicine and his PhD from the University of Oklahoma. He served in the US Army as a medic.

On August 25, 1962 Thomas married Ann Kirkpatrick.

Thomas was a professor of pharmacology in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa from 1972 until his retirement in 2005.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed time spent reading, birding, and travel.

Thomas is survived by his children, Cynthia (Jeff) Klinghoffer of Bristol, PA, Heather Ann (Takashi) Nakumara of Vancouver, BC, and Elliot Shires of Iowa City; grandchildren, Sidney Klinghoffer and Toby and Ben Nakumara; and his sister, Gaye Smith of South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ann in 2014.
