Art was born July 17, 1934 in Omaha, NE, the son of Harry A. and Agnes Hannigan Mayer. He was a graduate of Creighton Prep High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Creighton University.

He was drafted and served with the 11th Air Borne Division in Augsburg, Germany where his paternal grandparents were born. He taught high school English and math to servicemen studying for their GEDs. He administered testing and if the GI was successful, he would arrange for them to receive a diploma from their former high school.

Upon discharge from the service and being unable to work in the FBI because of poor eyesight, he sought investigative work. He worked in North Platte and Hastings, Nebraska investigating insurance claims until he began operating his own company in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He handled insurance claims and did private investigations. He developed expertise in evaluating suspicious fires and in handwriting analysis. He ended his working career as a law firm administrator.

On July 17, 1989 Art married Judith (Graves) Higgs.

In addition to Ft. Dodge, he also resided in Sioux City, Bella Vista, AR. He moved to Iowa City in 2013.

Art attended Trinity Episcopal Church. He was past Iowa president of Sertoma and the American Association of Legal Administrators. In September of 2023 Art went on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He had a sense of humor that enabled him to do standup comedy, to emcee numerous community events, plan roasts for dignitaries, and write skits. He was honored to serve as the officiant at memorial gatherings for his unchurched golf friends. He was a gifted artist who enjoyed drawing characters and cartoons. He was an extra in two movies, “The Birds” and “Experiment in Terror”.

Art is survived by his wife, Judith Higgs-Mayer; children, Angela (Ross) Frank of Omaha, Scott Mayer of Scottsdale, AZ, and Anthony Mayer of Mason City; step-children, Heather (Dan) McGowan of Naperville, IL, and Heath Higgs of Littleton, CO; grandchildren, Harrison, Sean, Riley, Sarah, Hayden, Maya, and Jinsey; step-grandchildren Ross and Lauren, his sister, Annette (Tom) Kutilek of Omaha; and sister-in-law, Janet Morlock of Peoria, IL.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in law, and a sister, Patricia Ehrhart.
