Marilyn Mae (Mosbach) Skaugstad, age 91, died peacefully on June 22, 2024, surrounded by her husband and family.
Marilyn was born May 8, 1933, in Humboldt, Iowa to Dr. Lawrence ‘Doc’ and Esther (Olson) Mosbach. She attended Humboldt schools, where she was active in cheerleading and was an All-State soprano. She then went on to the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Tri-Delta sorority, the Scottish Highlanders and participated in many pageants, including being crowned Miss University of Iowa (SUI).
Marilyn was united in marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Charles ‘Brownie’ Skaugstad, MD, on December 28, 1953. They settled in Coralville and Iowa City, where Marilyn was a devoted stay-at-home mother to their children, Liz and Chuck, while supporting Brownie’s family medicine practice. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, PEO Chapter E, Past-President of the Tri-Delta House Corporation, Past Board member of Iowa Medical Partners, Vesterheim Museum and Sons of Norway. She enjoyed her bridge club, tennis group, Dance Club and Sanibel Island beach trips with her family.
Marilyn was especially proud of her Norwegian heritage. She was well-known for her holiday baking, was honored to be featured on the cover of the ‘Notably Norwegian’ cookbook and enjoyed sharing her extensive collection of Norwegian antiques and artifacts.
Marilyn was the consummate hostess; she and Brownie loved entertaining the dozens of extended family and friends that visited their home before Hawkeye home football games and her creativity shined when making magical holiday memories for her grandchildren.
Marilyn is survived by her husband; two children – Lizabeth (John) Baker of Hinsdale, Illinois and Charles (Sheryl) Skaugstad, Jr. of Iowa City; four grandchildren – Brett (Bryan) Watson, JL (Michaela) Baker, Charles ‘Trey’ Skaugstad, III and Chaston (Paul) Fisher; six great-grandchildren – Beckett, Beau and Banks Watson, Jack and James Baker and Grayson Fisher; brother Lawrence (Shirley) Mosbach and brother-in-law Dean (Shirley) Skaugstad, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was proceeded in death by her parents and sister Meredith Mosbach Noble.
A private family burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date with details to be announced when decided. Memorials in Marilyn’s memory may be directed to Safety Village or the Iowa Children’s Museum.
