Dorothy Jane Housel, 96, a lifetime resident of Iowa City passed away peacefully June 26, 2024, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City with family by her side.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday August 17th in the Heiden room at Oaknoll Retirement Residence at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Oaknoll Foundation or Iowa City Hospice.

Dorothy was born on January 12, 1928, in Iowa City to Eugene and Myrtle Hubbard. She was united in marriage to Wayne Housel on June 21, 1947.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Bill Housel, Iowa City, Joanne (Roger) Nelson, North Henderson, Il, Susan Craft-Small, Lexington, Missouri, Jim (Chris) Housel, Overland Park KS, Bob (Karen) Housel, North Liberty, IA, Jennifer (Dan) Drake, Marion, IA, 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Housel, her parents and brothers Gene (Cheri) and Bill (Jean) Hubbard.

Dorothy enjoyed life to the fullest, but her family is what brought her the greatest joy. She cared for her family and home as well as assisted in the family business, Jacksons Gift and China. She was an active member of the First United Methodist church for many years. She was active in personal ministries throughout her life. Dorothy and Wayne spent many years boating and exploring the beautiful Bahamas, the Florida coast and beyond. Her love for travel was boundless, leading her to explore the world and the United States, always seeking new experiences, cultures, making new friends and visiting old. As an avid card player, Dorothy enjoyed the camaraderie and competition of her favorite games, particularly bridge. She was an amazing example of how to live life for her family and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the Oaknoll staff and community as well as Iowa City Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
