Butch was born on August 18,1942, in Iowa City to George and Stella (Stramp) Miller. He graduated from Iowa City City High School in 1960.

Butch married the love of his life, Phyllis (Woode), on July 5, 1964, in Iowa City. They were blessed with 3 children, Martie, Steven, and Nick.

Butch worked at Pipals meat market in Iowa City after high school and then worked at Procter & Gamble for over 33 years, retiring at the young age of 55.

He was able to spend 25+ years in retirement where he did so many things that brought him joy. He purchased a 1930 Model A Ford that he enjoyed driving around town and was an annual entry in the City High homecoming parade. He restored many antique motor scooters by tearing them down to the frame and rebuilding them to museum grade quality. He had an incredible gift of being able to build or fix anything. For each of the last 18 years, he and Phyllis would create over 100 handmade Christmas ornaments in their wood shop and distribute them to family and friends who anxiously awaited their arrival (the theme was always kept a secret!). Butch had about any tool you could ever need and was happy to loan them out, or better yet, come help you or ‘supervise’. In recent years, you would find Butch and Phyllis sitting on the front deck, often spending time with neighbors and friends. Butch was a friend to all who knew him.

Above all, Butch loved spending time with his family, watching Hawkeye football and wrestling and City High athletics. Family dinners on Sunday afternoons and holidays often included Butch grilling meat or preparing his famous roast dinner or fried turkey. He loved woodworking and used his skills to build things for his home, as well as items for his grandchildren and friends.

Butch is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Phyllis, daughter, Martie (Kevin) Fleming of Jackson, MI, and sons Steven (Julie) Miller of North Liberty, IA, and Nick (Morgan) Miller of Apple Valley, MN. Grandchildren include Ian (Sarah) Fleming, Amalie (Ricky) Greig, Megan (Michael Johnson) Miller, Ella Miller, Ari, Vivienne and Coco Miller. Great grandchildren include Norah Greig and Ada and Ryland Fleming. He is also survived by his sister, Sandi Barger, as well as numerous extended family and friends.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
