David was born on November 15, 1944 in Abeline, Texas to Dorothy (Bowdoin) Schoonover. From childhood he pursued scholarly endeavors, and went to the University of Texas in Austin, the University of Michigan for a Masters in English, and Princeton for his PhD.

David launched his academic career teaching English literature in Iran. When he returned to the states, he got a library degree specializing in rare books at the University of Texas. He then spent two years at Northwestern University in a rare book internship. He was the Curator of American Literature at Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Following his work at Yale, David became the Curator of Special Collections at the University of Iowa.

David was an accomplished chef and edited eight books in the Szathmáry Culinary Arts Series. His wry humor and penchant for quoting literary ditties will be missed. Through his life he treasured his various Scottish Terriers, owning four over the years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy and is survived by his dear friend and companion, Donna Hirst.

A memorial service for David will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City.

Memorials may be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ Mission Board Fund.
