Raymond Earl was born on November 27, 1940, to Hazel Ogier Stanley and Herbert Earl Stanley at their family farm home. Raymond grew up on the farm located in Ringgold County, Iowa between Kellerton and Mt. Ayr. He lived with his parents and grandparents and his sister, Merelene. Raymond attended country school not far from his home and always shared fond memories of attending school with Ms. Retha. He was very proud of and enjoyed the communities of Kellerton and Mt. Ayr. He attended high school in Mt. Ayr, Iowa where his love for math and problem solving grew strong. He was very active in 4-H, going to the Iowa State Fair several times. After graduating from high school, although he had strong connections to the farm he pursued a degree in Industrial Engineering at Iowa State University.

While attending University he met Jane Ann North at a Sunday Dinner at Collegiate United Methodist Church. While Jane completed her degree at Iowa State, Raymond joined the Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Devins and was later stationed in South Korea for a year. He and Jane were engaged, and a wedding was planned upon his return. On July 31,1965 Ray and Jane were married and settled in Laurel, Maryland as Ray continued his tour at Fort Meade. On October 14, 1966, their daughter, Susan was born.

After completing his tour of service Raymond brought his family back to Ames, Iowa and completed his Master’s Degree in industrial engineering at Iowa State University.

Raymond made a successful career working for United Parcel Service in Des Moines. While there he traveled for the company and assisted in Omaha, Nebraska, Greenwich, Connecticut to mention a few. He and Jane moved back to Pennsylvania in December of 1988 as he continued working for UPS in Hunt Valley, Maryland. He retired in August of 1995 and he and Jane once again returned to Iowa, making their home near Manson, Iowa. In 2010 Ray and Jane relocated to Iowa City to be near Susan and their three grandchildren, Sebastian, Savannah, and Sophia.

Ray kept busy feeding the birds and squirrels, relocating a few chipmunks, and attending many events with the grandchildren. He also enjoyed going to Village Inn and Midtown Family Restaurant with anyone who would go along. He enjoyed following the stock market and working on Sudoku puzzles. He was quiet sometimes but was truly a devoted husband, loving Dad and very special grandpa.

Ray is survived by his wife, Jane Stanley of Iowa City; daughter, Susan Stanley of Iowa City; two granddaughters, Savannah (Jonny) Pomerleau of Des Moines, and Sophia Surom of Iowa City; and a sister, Merlene Stanley of Louisville, CO; and extended family.

Ray was preceded in death by his grandson, Sebastian.
