Funeral services for John J. Beecher Sr., 87, Iowa City, were held July 23 at St. Mary's Catholic church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Edward O'Melia officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Mr. Beecher died July 20 at Beverly Manor Care Center after a short illness.

The son of James and Ellen Wade Beecher, he was born Jan. 6, 1989 in Johnson county. He married Agnes L. Leonard Jan. 16, 1923 in Nolan Settlement. She died in 1980.

Mr. Beecher graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Dubuque and attended Iowa State University in Ames. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, the Third Degree Knights of Columbus and the West Branch Lions club. He received the Good Samaritan Award for service to the Emergency Housing Project in Iowa City in March.

He was a lifelong Cedar and Johnson county farmer.

Mr. Beecher is survived by a son, John Jr., West Branch; 2 daughters, Mrs. Matthew (Gervase) Barron, Audubon; and Mrs. James (Patrice) Feeny, Wayzata, Minn.; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister.
