David George Harney, 83, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Monday, March 18, 2024, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. Father Charles Fladung will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 PM to 6 PM at the Church, where a Scripture Service will be held at 3 PM. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Solon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, St. Mary (Solon) Cemetery Fund, or the Dave Harney Memorial Fund.
Dave was born August 15, 1940, in Iowa City, the son of Ambrose and Rose (Roit) Harney. He was a 1959 graduate of University High School in Iowa City. On August 6, 1963, Dave married the love of his life Marianne Sovers.
Dave was a longtime Solon (Big Grove Township) farmer. He was also employed at the Solon Post Office for 12 years, Thomas & Betts for 19 years, and Victor Metal for 7 years.
Dave was a member of St. Mary Church, where he was an usher. He was part of the Solon Football Chain Crew for 31 years. Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, canning, Iowa Hawkeye sports, and especially cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren.
Dave is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marianne and their two children, Laurie (Gary) Stinocher of Solon and Jeff Harney (Angela Charsha-Harney) of Coralville; grandchildren, Brittany and Ashley Stinocher and Gabe and Sidney Harney; four siblings, Edmund Harney, Patrick (Jean) Harney, and Rosa (Gene) Langenberg, all of Iowa City , and Virginia (Dan) Ockenfels of Fairfax; sisters-in-law, Betty Harney of Forney, Texas, and Emily Harney of Iowa City; brothers-in-law, Ken (Linda) Sovers of Solon and Ron Sovers of Riverside, California; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Dave was preceded by his parents and siblings, Francis, Vincent, Paul, Ambrose “Joe,” Thomas, Vivian Clemen, Mary Ellen Dlouhy, James, and Therese Harney.
