Richard Bruce Stump, 80, of Iowa City passed away on August 19, 2023.
Dick was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 27, 1942, to Carl Elsworth Stump and Helen Irene (Spangler) Stump. He graduated from Delhaas High School, Bristol, Pennsylvania in 1960, where he played football and basketball, and was co-captain in both sports during his senior year.
He received a BS degree in metallurgical engineering from Lafayette College, Easton, 1964. Later, in 1971, Dick earned a Masters in Business Administration from Northern University, De Kalb, IL, where he was awarded the Sigma Iota Epsilon academic key by The Academy of Management for accomplishments in management studies.
His early working career included positions as a quality engineer, quality engineering manager and manufacturing superintendent for manufacturers of nuclear reactor assemblies; aerospace nose-cone delivery systems; components for jet-propelled aircraft; and as a quality and reliability management consultant for Rath & Strong, Lexington, MA. In 1982 Dick arrived in Iowa City as the Quality & Productivity Manager for the Westinghouse Electric Company (later National Computer Systems Inc.) where he worked for almost nine years.
During 1990 Dick pursued self-employment interests founding his own firm, Consultants in Quality Inc., providing leadership for manufacturing and service companies to establish quality management systems and assist them to gain certification to international standards when necessary. Another area of concentration included Six-Sigma Quality, where Dick led implementation of systems and problem-solving techniques to improve outcomes of products and services through reduction of defects and scrap.
Later in his career he contracted with both The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and The National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program, division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), as both a lead assessor and technical expert. These assignments took Dick across the USA “from California to the New York Island' and to foreign countries including Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, India, Brazil, Italy, France, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Israel, Hong Kong SAR and China.
Dick was very active in eastern Iowa with Section # 1303, the eastern Iowa section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), reaching the President's chair for the 1988-89 season. During this term he led Section 1303 to third place in the ASQ national completion for large-size sections, behind the Sections representing Detroit and Boston. He was also recognized as a Fellow (FASQ) by the Society in 1997, with whom he also earned formal certification as a Six-Sigma Black Belt, Quality Engineer and Quality Auditor. For over 25 years he reviewed manuscripts for Quality Progress, ASQ's International magazine.
On September 26, 1964, Dick and his high-school sweetheart, Lois Ann Catalanotti, were married in Bristol, PA. Lois has been the love of his life for over 58 years and provided a significant involvement for the success of what became the "family business". Lois shared Dick's enthusiasm for Iowa Hawkeye sports, especially football and wrestling, where they had season tickets for over 30 years- On Iowa, Go Hawks!
Dick enjoyed supporting the wrestling and soccer interests of their two sons, including his undefeated record as a substitute soccer head coach (1-0). He also took pride in their scholastic achievements after helping them learn to read prior to entering kindergarten. For many years he made giving away copies of the phonics training book free as an unconditional gift to friends with small children.
Dick is survived by Lois and their two sons: Richard Edward Stump, of Chicago, IL, and Gregory Donald Stump of Seattle, WA; brother Carl Donald Stump of Seaford, DE (wife Bonnie and children and grandchildren); and sister Pamela Jean Wyke (nee Stump) of Culpeper, VA (husband Kenneth and children and grandchildren).
Dick was preceded in death by both of his parents.
Honoring his wishes, he will be cremated, and no services will be held. Instead of sending flowers, please send contributions in Dick's memory to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA 52244, which will go to Dr. Lloyd Knowler Quality Engineering Scholarship.
