Ernest “Ernie” W. Lehman, 82, died Thursday, July 20, 2023 in Port Charlotte, Florida.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, August 18, 2023 at Good News Bible Church, 845 Pepperwood Lane, Iowa City. Rev. Chris Arch will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday, August 17, 2023 from 4 PM to 6PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Inurnment will be at Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed Good News Bible Church or the Free Medical Clinic.

Ernie was born July 16, 1941 in Iowa Falls, the son of Ernest and Helen (Hall) Lehman. He moved to Iowa City in 1961 and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa. On September 9, 1961, Ernie married DeAnn Mills.

Ernie was co-owner of Enzlers in downtown Iowa City for thirty-six years, retiring in 2005.

Ernie served on the Iowa City City Council for many years and was past Mayor of Iowa City. Ernie was a past president of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, Old Capitol Kiwanis, and the Downtown Assn. He served on numerous boards; the Mercy Hospital Advisory Board, Oaknoll Retirement Residence, Salvation Army, Free Medical Clinic, and the National Luggage Dealers Assn. He was a member of Good News Bible Church and First Presbyterian Church in Punta Gorda, FL.

Ernie and De Ann moved to Florida three years ago.

Ernie is survive by his wife, DeAnn; their sons, E.J. (Jan Grenko) of Iowa City and Scott (Mindi) of Knoxville, IL; grandchildren, Hailey and Chris Hebl (Noah), Megan and Ryan Lebeda (Bella and Nate), and Nicole “Nikki”; step-grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Grenko (Oliver, Amelie, and Ellette), Tyler Grenko, and Kye and Catherine Grenko (Wes and Haven); siblings, Robert (Carol) Lehman of Cedar Rapids, Paul (Karen) Lehman of Ankeny, Gwen (Robert) Frese of Nevada, IA, and Delores Lehman of Hiawatha.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cheryl; his in-laws, Willis and Loraine Mills; sister and brother-in-law, Karen Lehman, Ron Nichols, and Robert Frese.
