William “Bill” Weber, 69, of Riverside, passed away under hospice care on July 12, 2023, after a brave battle with cancer.

A visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2023, in The Kirkwood Room in Iowa City, with a service to follow at 5:00 p.m.

Bill was born the summer of 1954 in DeWitt, Iowa to Leo and Dorothy (Schunter) Weber. He was active in Boy Scouts, excelled in band and choir and participated in several sports, including distance running.

After graduation from DeWitt Central in 1972, Bill attended Westmar College in LeMars, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in secondary education in 1976. His vocal music teaching career included Chariton, Dubuque Wahlert and Guthrie Center. Bill attended graduate school at the University of Iowa before changing career paths, working in sales for RL Polk/Equifax for 10 years.

After beating cancer in 2000 and 2002, a new chapter of Bill’s life began. He worked for the next 19 years as a paraeducator at Highland High School, helping students from all walks of life achieve better personal and academic success.

In 2022, Bill began another battle with cancer after 20 years of being free from the disease.

Bill loved sports, especially all things Hawkeye. A special passion for history, he could have easily pursued that for a career instead of music. He loved reading and kept up his vocabulary with the daily NY Times crossword puzzles, completed in ink. While at Highland, he encouraged students to play chess and was involved in a committee to raise funds for the library. He supported the Highland Music Boosters and was a Hawkeye Dad.

Most important to Bill was his family. On July 18, 1981, Bill married Jean Anderson in Marion, Iowa; to this union two daughters were born. Bill often said that being a “girl dad” was his most rewarding yet challenging position. He was a proud dad and loved his girls with all his heart.

Bill was a talented cook, specializing in chili and chowder, grilling and preparing the special Weber potatoes.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Jean; daughters: Erin Weber (Patrick Burkhart) and Emily Weber (Phil Snyder); brother, Andy (Joni) Weber, 2 nephews, Nick (Mary) Weber; Grant (Nicole) Weber; niece, Alethea (Lee) Kaiser; sister-in-law, Linda Lospalluto and niece Kate (Scott) Beskid; 6 great nieces & nephews; maternal cousins, Carolyn & Susan; and his granddog, Barnes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Margaret; brother, Thomas (in infancy); brother-in-law, Phil Lospalluto; aunts, Margaret and Mildred; and uncle, Bill.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in Bill’s name to Highland Community Schools to be used for the various initiatives in the Resource Room.
